WEEK 4: MLB News and Rankings

Major headlines circulating around the league in this week's recap.

The Athletics made an announcement last week regarding their entry into a binding agreement to acquire land in Nevada, close to the Las Vegas strip. They plan to commence the construction of a new stadium at that location next year and may relocate from Oakland as early as 2025. With a 4-18 record in the early stages of the season, the A's are on track to win just 29 games as of Monday.

Last Thursday, Major League Baseball declared that Max Scherzer of the Mets has been suspended for 10 games, subsequent to his ejection during Wednesday's game against the Dodgers following a check for illegal substances. Scherzer has chosen not to contest the penalty and will start serving the suspension right away.

After his 80-game suspension for PED use, Tatis finally returned to the field during the away game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He batted leadoff and played in right field, his new regular position since the Padres signed All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts during the last offseason. However, Tatis struggled during the game, going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.

  • Drew Maggi, who had been playing in 1,155 minor-league games since 2010 and was 33 years old, started to question whether he would ever have a chance to play for a big-league club. However, on Sunday, he received the news that he had been chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates while playing for the Double-A Altoona Curve as an infielder.
  • During the Astros' sweep against the Braves in Atlanta, Alvarez played a crucial role. He hit two go-ahead home runs on Friday and Saturday respectively, and then contributed a game-tying two-run single in the eighth inning on Sunday with two outs.
